The ocean is in dire need of protection. Over 190 countries around the world have committed to protect 30% of their land and waters by 2030. But right now, less than 3% of the ocean is highly protected and many leaders still have no plan to meet their commitments – in some cases, they are even fabricating levels of protection that don’t meet the international standard. So what does it mean for an area of the ocean to be considered “highly protected” and count toward the 30% protection goal? It has to meet certain criteria outlined by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, a leading voice in the 30x30 movement. Meeting these standards means that an area is safe enough from destructive practices that it can heal from climate change and exploitation, and ultimately thrive for generations to come.
