“The Mediterranean is one of the deadliest refugee routes in the world. We are acting. Help us to send the SEA PUNK I on its next rotations!”
Hi there!
We are the Sea Punks, and with your help, we want to continue saving lives in the central Mediterranean.
In July 2024, just before our next rotation, water suddenly starts flooding into the engine room. The pump can’t keep up with the amount of water. Seconds before the crew has to evacuate, a brave Sea Punk plugs the leak with a stick—just in time.
It’s clear: Sea Punk I needs to be lifted out of the water. But there’s no space in Sicily’s dry docks, so we head to Malta. There, professionals are working tirelessly to repair our ship—they are hammering, cutting, and welding to get it ready for the next rotation.
Over the weeks, the costs rise significantly: lifting the ship, repairing the leak, additional repairs as required by our classification society, the expensive accommodation for the crew in Malta during the work, and administrative costs are stretching us to our limits. In total, the expenses have exceeded €100,000—more than ever before.
By November 2024, Sea Punk I is finally back in the water. Everyone in the organization is working tirelessly to prepare for the next rotation. One thing is clear: we won’t give up!
Our Rotations
Since September 2023, our ship has been in action. In our first rotation, we helped rescue 83 people in distress, alongside the rescue ship Nadir. In February 2024, we assisted 54 people in reaching a safe harbor from an unseaworthy boat. In June 2024, we stabilized multiple boats and rescued 285 people from drowning.
Then came December 2024, our most tragic rotation yet: at the coordinates of a distress call, more than a dozen people are floating in the water after their boat sank. We rescued 18 people and recovered the body of a small child. Despite all efforts, another child did not survive during the attempt to revive them. 17 people survived—but the pain is deep.
We Need You!
We are still struggling financially, month by month. But our task is far from over. To continue saving lives, we rely on your support. Every euro helps us get back out there and help where no one else does.
