“The volunteers at the Darmstädter Tafel save food from the waste bin every day and support those in need with lunch and food distribution. For this we need YOU and YOUR support!”
The Darmstädter Tafel endeavours to strike a balance between surplus and shortage. Several times a day, we collect food from our sponsors that can no longer be used in the economic process but is still of perfect quality - for example, fruit with minor blemishes, baked goods from the previous day, incorrectly bottled goods or milk and dairy products just before the best-before date.
Our volunteers collect the goods in refrigerated lorries, sort them in our warehouse and give them to people in need for a small contribution towards costs. In this way, we rescue food every day that would otherwise end up in the bin. This regularly supports people such as senior citizens affected by poverty in old age, single parents, students, recipients of social benefits, refugees and low-income earners. We also cooperate with other organisations in our region, for example by delivering food.
In addition to serving food, our guests also enjoy socialising over lunch. We offer this catering service Monday to Friday in the neighbouring community hall for a small contribution towards costs.
We are currently planning to modernise our office and customer service. At the moment, everything is done manually with lots of paper, folders and a good dose of Excel. In order to improve our processes, help more people and work more sustainably, we will digitise our office. To do this, we need new hardware and software.
Our second, almost more important, project is the search for a new property, as we are literally bursting at the seams at our current location. One consequence of this is that we are unable to help as many people as we would like because we simply don't have enough capacity.
